We live in the day of customization. Anything we touch we can pay the extra fee and customize it to match our personalities and to distinguish us from the crowd. I can say I am guilty that a few things I have personalized but those are things that are in my personal life – nothing in my professional life even shows a remote glimpse of my personality.
This is important when you are a professional – whether you are seeking a new career or not. If you want to be taken seriously then you need to put yourself out there in a serious fashion. Think about a person’s reaction when they call you and some explicit rap song is your call tone – or some hard core grunge rocker is yelling at you. Is this really the message that you want to send to any of your co-workers, clients or anyone who is calling you on a professional basis?
So say you don’t have that crazy ring tone – say you have the voice mail I hear so commonly “Yo this is (insert name here), you know what to do.” Yeah I do know what to do, hang up and NOT leave a message. How about leaving a bible verse and a God Bless you at the end of your voice mail you might ask? It might seem like a nice idea but it is yet another way to put off a non-Christian client, co-worker or so on who might call.
Remember people – unless you KNOW who is calling answering the phone in a professional way might be a good thing. If you screen your calls leave a professional message on there. When in doubt I suggest the canned one that your cellular provider offers. It is better to be safe than sorry. You never know when your next opportunity might be calling you!
